Purpose:
To bring together people interested in the historical/genealogical background of the Gallia County area.
To discover, collect, and preserve historical/genealogical material pertaining to the Gallia County area and make it available to the public.
To disseminate historical/genealogical material pertaining to the Gallia County area.
Meetings:
The Historical Society meets the third Sunday of January, February, April, May, September, and October at 2:00 p.m. at 412 Second Avenue, Gallipolis, Ohio.
The Genealogical Society meets monthly every second Thursday except July, August, and December at 7:00 p.m. at 412 Second Avenue, Gallipolis, Ohio.
First Families of Gallia County:
Any member of The Gallia County Historical/Genealogical Society who has an ancestor in Gallia County prior to December 31, 1820 may join. The member must fill out an application and submit proving documents for proof of residence by 1820 and for proof of each step in the line of descent from the ancestor. The fee is $15.00, $1.00 of which must be sent with the application request. An annual banquet is held for induction of new members in October of each year. Program booklets including ancestors and members are available from 1990 to 1995 at $3.00 ppd, for each.
Ancestor Charts:
An ancestor chart collection with an index card for every name on the chart is maintained by the Society. Don't overlook this opportunity to match these names with someone else seeking the same people you are. Send chart plus a 3"x5" card for each person with vital statistics and your name, address, and date in lower right hand corner.
Christmas Ornaments:
A Landmark Series of Christmas Ornaments depicting historic buildings and events in Gallia County is available. They include the Landing of French Five Hundred Settlers (Bicentennial - 1990 - gold); the Original Settlement of Log Cabins (Bicentennial - 1990 - silver); "Our House" Museum (1991 - blue); Gallipolis Locks and Dam (1992 - seafoam green); Holzer Hospital (1993 - white); First Post Office (1994 - wine); and Ariel Theater (1995 - red). Cost is $6.50 (which includes Ohio sales tax) and $2.50 postage and handling if mailed.
Posters:
We have a beautiful limited edition (1,500) Bicentennial print which features the Bandstand surrounded by scenes of Gallipolis and our heritage. It is done in watercolors of blue, brick, and earth tones. $10.00 picked up and $14.00 in mailing tube.
Historical Landmark Coverlet:
Featuring 13 landmarks, this coverlet is 50" x 65", made of 100% woven cotton, and comes in Williamsburg Blue, Cranberry Red, or Hunter Green. Cost is $45.00 plus $6.00 postage and handling. Ohio residents must add 7.25% Ohio Sales tax.

The often requested "Gallia County, Ohio - People in History to 1980" is out of print. A reprint of the 1882 Hardesty's "History of Gallia County" and a reprint of the "Illustrated Atlas" may be purchased from our book store.
