Settlers and Builders of Gallia County is an organization to honor and document ancestors who settled in Gallia County between 1 January 1821 and 31 December 1860 and to recognize their descendants. Any member of the Gallia County Historical/Genealogical Society who is a direct descendant of an individual who settled in Gallia County between 1 January 1821 and 31 December 1860 is eligible for membership. This organization will be recognized for the first time in October 2005. The first of these societies, First Families of Gallia County, was started in 1990 as a joint effort of the Gallia County Genealogical Society and the Gallia County Historical Society. The second society, Society of Civil War Families of Gallia County was also a joint effort. This year, The Gallia County Historical/Genealogical Society will be sponsoring another lineage society, Settlers and Builders of Gallia County. The planning and efforts involved in sponsoring these societies, arranging banquets, and reviewing applications is the result of hard work and countless hours spent by many devoted volunteers and not the efforts of any one individual. The lineage societies of Gallia County are sanctioned by the Gallia County Historical/Genealogical Society and not by the Ohio Genealogical Society. The OGS can only sponsor and sanction their own lineage societies at the state level and have nothing to do with lineage societies at the county level. To belong to the state lineage societies, you must join the state organization. Belonging to a county chapter does not make you a member of the state organization. The names, First Families of Gallia County, Society of Civil War Families of Gallia County and Settlers and Builders of Gallia County are registered with the State of Ohio by the Gallia County Historical/Genealogical Society. County lineage societies are endorsed and maintained by the local historical and/or genealogical society of that county. The state genealogical society has no connection with the local lineages societies. The Gallia County Historical/Genealogical Society has sponsored the lineage societies of Gallia County since 1990. All applications are available at the GCHS Applications Page The listing that follows here is the names of the ancestors and the date which they are first documented to have been in Gallia County. The records used for documentation made by viewed at the Society office currently at 412 Second Avenue, Gallipolis.
